For many people and I, reading is a form of escapism where we can diminish the pressure and stress from reality by entering a new world to indulge vicariously in an alternate reality. As a visual content creator and graphic designer, Storytelling and symbolism plays a significant role within my creative vision and artistic direction. This project is called ‘Escapism’ and tells the beautiful story of how one can be transported into another world simply by reading from a book. During the process of creating this story, I wanted the photographs to convey the feeling of Escapism clearly and beautifully, particularly through literature. To do so, I decided to use a book and an extravagant gown to demonstrate how the model shifts from reality.
[Contains Spoilers!] In the first part of the Story the girl is shown in a black and white photograph, on the train holding a book in her arms, resembling the dullness of her ‘reality’; As the story continues, the girl begins to open her book and instantly transforms into a glamourous red gown and appears to be in a different world. The end of the story shows the girl closing her book only to return to reality, that is until the next time she re-opens it… Within the last picture of the story, a piece of red organza flies away with the wind outside the train. Like any story, I wanted to leave room for interpretation… Does the red organza floating away symbolise the fictional world she is leaving behind? Or perhaps does it symbolise the feelings and experiences the girl had whilst in the alternate reality are still intact and will stay with her in any world just like a memory would?
This Story was created within my second year of university and features as a proposal for a VOGUE magazine and includes a beautiful message, photography, and magazine layouts.
